I wanted to offer a quick update [see previous post: Louisiana and the OIF] on the initiative for Louisiana to join the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie (OIF).
As a bit of background, the OIF is an organization tasked with promoting the interests of francophone communities and supporting initiatives at a local level to realize francophone programs. Louisiana’s joining the OIF as an observer would offer the state global recognition of its diverse francophone and creolophone communities, as well as provide resources and international partnerships that could help invigorate language programs and foster trade ties with francophone partners. In becoming formally involved in the OIF, Louisiana can work to build a thriving ecosystem for francophone and creolophone communities that is built on three pillars: grassroots efforts, state support, and international partnerships.
More details can be found in my article referenced above that outlines how the initiative came about and evolved. The following is a short synopsis of what has occurred since I last wrote on the topic.
In working with Senator Cassidy’s office, I received word back in late December from the International Organizations office at the State Department that they gave Louisiana authorization to move forward and apply as an observer to the OIF.
After getting the State Department’s approval, I followed up with an email last week to the OIF Secretary General, Madame Michaëlle Jean, in which I explained the steps taken to coordinate the initiative with the Governor’s office, CODOFIL, and the State Department. In the email I verified the procedure and asked for the next steps so we could move forward. I attached letters from Governor Edwards and our correspondences with the State Department to provide further context.
I received confirmation last week from the Secretary General’s office saying that they received the letter and that they were excited and would get back to me shortly. I am hoping to hear back this week so we can move forward with the steps they recommend proceeding forward.
