My family has deep Creole roots in New Orleans dating back to the late 1700s. As recently as my grandmother, Creole was spoken in my family. That language was never passed down to me, so when I found out there was a Creole language group on Facebook I jumped at the chance to reclaim part of my lost heritage.
Over the past year and a half I have been under the guidance of Christophe Landry. Before joining the Facebook group I didn’t know one word of Creole – not one. I am now able to write basic sentences and I can understand much of what has been written. I am also learning to verbalize correct pronunciation of the language.
Christophe takes time, in the Facebook group, to encourage, share, teach and correct all of us new learners. He has also placed many documents on the site so we can do self-paced learning. In addition to that, Christophe has made many videos that are on YouTube where we can learn basic Creole and listen to the language being spoken.
Over the last year and a half I have grown to respect and value Christophe’s expertise, passion and dedication to keeping the Creole language alive. Kouri-Vini would become extinct without the dedication of people like Christophe.
Language is the foundation for any culture. There is no other reason, than Christophe and the Facebook group, that I am able to reconnect with my Creole culture. Now that I have a granddaughter, I am able to pass down the language to her.
Louisiana Creole cannot fade away.
