An app enabling users to type in Kouri-Vini (aka Louisiana Creole) has been Released for Apple Mobile Devices (iPhones and iPads).
On Monday, 19th September 2016, Aaron Walton, in collaboration with Louisiana Historic and Cultural Vistas (LHCV), released an app named Kouri-Vini. The App allows the user to install a keyboard designed specifically for Kouri-Vini (aka Louisiana Creole) and the app provides easy access to a guide regarding Kouri-Vini’s unique alphabet, easy access to the Louisiana Creole Dictionary, as well as easy access to other Kouri-Vini language resources.
Within the last decade, the Kouri-Vini language has seen a resurgence and has began to be used regularly by the younger generation. This resurgence has been helped by the use of social media; however, until now, there have been several hinderances to using Kouri-Vini in typing. This app aims to remove the hinderances caused by using keyboards that are intended for other languages by being specifically designed for Kouri-Vini.
The keyboard was constructed based on the feedback of several beta-tests and will continue to be improved upon with the feedback received by users after the release.
Aaron Walton studied Language Development and Anthropology at the Graduate Institute of Linguistics. He also makes the source code of the Kouri-Vini app available to others for the purpose of porting the app to other platforms or for using the basic framework for other minority languages.
