Joseph B. Darensbourg is a native New Orleanian and multi-generational Louisianian, a direct descendant of the Swedish colonist and military commandant Karl Frederik von Arensberg who helped to establish the Côte-des-Allemands (German Coast) in 1721.
Like so many New Orleans Creoles, Joseph is a musician and artist influenced by local culture and family. His great-grand uncle was an all star in the great Louis Armstrong’s band. He has studied, learned and recorded “Bayou Ballads” with the late John Dubois master raconteur of Creole/Cajun folk arts. In addition to Louisiana Creole music, he sings low tenor and plays the rebec for the New Orleans Musica da Camera. He also sings and performs classical Arabic, Turkish, Ottoman, Bulgarian, Sephardic, and Flamenco music and he is versed in Hebrew and Aramaic canting.
Joseph’s focus is the preservation of his ancestral Pointe Coupée Parish Louisiana Creole traditions.
